no more chances.
it's time to get down to business.
Aaron tucked his crop under his arm and strolled up to the woman at the rail. "I still think you are wrong by retiring Spooky. Just saying..." He turned and was about to walk away when he heard Kirsten's commanding voice stop him in his tracks. "And I still think you are only a rider so you better watch your mouth. He is six years old. He's had enough chances now. It's my call. Consider this your final warning if you want to keep your job." Aaron rolled his eyes at her back and went to join Melanie at the gap. The red headed woman smirked at Aaron from behind her helmet. "Went well?" Aaron shook his head and mumbled under his breath. "Shut up Freckles."
Melanie laughed and mounted the elderly gray sprinter mare. Sugar pranced on the tip of her toes ready to get going on the track. Akita Rose Stables has finally brought their entire racing stock over to the GHF track to finish off the season. They had taken a month off from the racing circuit and just concentrated on making sure things were taken care of at home. Things were now running smoothly around the farm so it was time to concentrate on winning the big races on GHF.
She cued Sugar into her warm up exercises on the turf and looked over to see her sister mount the tall dark bay mare and ride on to the dirt track. They had a lot of horses to exercise this morning so they had better get a move on. Melanie looked up at the men in the clocking station and gave him a thumbs up. Sugar was scheduled for a clocking today for 3 furlongs.
Kirsten leaned back in her saddle and cued Goddess into a light gallop. It was great to be back on the GHF track again. This time they were going to go all out and win. The frisky mare tossed her head and eyed the people at the rail obviously trying to show off for the crowd. Kirsten shook her head. "Save it for the races girl". Goddess huffed and kept at her pace.
After awhile Kirsten finally turned her towards the inside rail and nudged her into a ground eating gallop. Her goal was to do the track twice over for a good two mile gallop. Hopefully Goddess would keep a steady pace and have a lot left to want to bring to the table so that she would be ready for her race coming up.
Melanie counted down silently in her head. 3...2...1... GO! With that she released her hold on the reins and kicked the gray mare into a full racing gallop. They picked up speed with every stride. It was always a thrill to ride a sprinter. They crossed the finish line in record time. Melanie smirked to herself. Akita Rose Stables was back in action.
Kirsten saw Melanie cross the wire just a head of her on the track next to hers and smiled. Sugar was looking good. It's good because this was the mare's final season. She patted Goddess on the neck. It was her final season too. Both were Grade Two, hoping to break into the Grade One racing circuit this year.
Goddess surged ahead, trying to catch a horse a few strides ahead of her. It was a no go though. Kirsten kept the reins firmly in hand. Goddess shook with frustration. The mare was way to competitive for her own liking.
